REFERENCE NUMBER 019/26-1 |
START DATE 1st OCTOBER 2026 |
SALARY LEVEL BES. GR. W 2 |
APPLICATION DEADLINE 16th APRIL 2026 |
FACULTY OF DESIGN
The post is permanent and full-time.
Knowledge, action, change: each day, these intrinsically linked values inspire us to meet and tackle the societal and technological challenges of our time. As well as providing the specialists and managers of tomorrow with the interdisciplinary knowledge they will need in their future careers, we seek to advance their problem-solving skills and their awareness of their responsibility in and to the world.
With the applied sciences at the heart of all we do, we work hand in hand to create a visionary campus with a positive and enduring effect on Hamburg and the surrounding region.
Typography has been a component of HAW Hamburg’s Communication Design degree course, part of the Faculty of Design, for a number of years. Its study at HAW Hamburg centres on building digital skills and we intend to expand this remit in the Faculty going forward. The professorship in Typography has the role of leading on research and teaching in this discipline within HAW Hamburg’s Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses in Communication Design, which are delivered by a strong team with a highly collaborative culture. Within the degree courses, typography takes its place in a canon of equally important and valued disciplines including brand design, editorial design, photography, interaction design, type design and time-based media. HAW Hamburg intends the subject of typography to provide points of intersection to these other disciplines and support the interdisciplinary character of the Faculty of Design.
We want the teaching of typography at HAW Hamburg to enable students to engage with the discipline in current and real-world contexts, innovate, and reflect on their work. Your role will be to give students space and freedom to explore and practise diverse forms of typographic expression, ranging from the artistic and experimental end of the spectrum to typography with a focus on functionality and utility, as well as providing them with fundamental knowledge and skills in typography. Your students will develop their aesthetic sense and critical judgement as they consider issues of design, technology and wider society. Ideally, you will supplement their learning by contextualising it within the history and theories of design.
As HAW Hamburg’s professor of typography, you will therefore cover a wide range of content in typographic design, encompassing printed and digital formats. In this context, we welcome applications from candidates who regard typographic systems as open, responsive structures.
The successful candidate will have completed a degree in an artistic or design discipline or a related field. We will also require relevant experience both in the design industry and in the teaching of and research into typography.
We are looking to recruit an outstanding designer who is strongly in tune with typography and its nuances and can express this affinity in diverse ways in both applied and artistic contemporary media. The successful candidate will also engage in reflection on typography in the context of our media-saturated modern life and the working conditions that prevail for designers in today’s world.
The role requires a passion for advancing the discipline of typography and an attitude of openness to change. We are seeking to appoint an individual who is aware of the various forms of discrimination that can occur in academia and prepared to take action against them where required.
The successful candidate will have at least five years’ professional experience, of which at least three years must have been acquired outside a higher education setting. We request that candidates present their experience, in areas such as the design industry, the media, research institutions, or freelance roles, in an illustrative format and submit this along with their application. Candidates may additionally wish to submit evidence of their work in design and artistic contexts, such as relevant examples of past projects, exhibitions, publications, and international collaborations.
We will expect the appointee to be able and willing to carry out administrative roles in the Faculty’s management, to seek to work constructively with others within and beyond the Faculty, and to enrich and expand the Faculty’s existing areas of research. As well as working with other faculties within HAW Hamburg, the appointee should seek to build working relationships with international partner institutions and organisations from the design, technology and communications industries in Germany and abroad. This aspect of the role in particular requires applicants to be proficient in English. The successful candidate will be willing to engage actively in HAW Hamburg’s management and governance structures and committees.
The appointee will also be expected to help drive HAW Hamburg’s digitalisation agenda, particularly by engaging in the development of digital teaching and learning formats.
For appointment as a professor, as well as the general staff requirements, the appointment requirements in accordance with Section 15 Para. 1-6 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (HmbHG) also apply. These can be read on our website.
This includes the willingness to participate in the self-administration committees of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences as well as a choice of residence in proximity to the university.
The denomination of the vacant post is under the caveat of assessment at appropriate intervals in accordance with Section 12 Para 7 HmbHG.
As well as the basic salary of grade W2 and basic performance benefits, a provision of appointment performance benefits is also possible which can be negotiated with the university president. In addition, there is also the possibility of granting a bonus from third-party funds.
Candidates who have not yet reached the age of 52 at the time of appointment may be appointed as tenured officials, otherwise the employment relationship is that of a standard employee.
HAW Hamburg Current Status of Selection Processes provides information on the status of all ongoing professorial recruitment procedures.
We offer you challenging work in an open-minded, forward-thinking university. You will be integrated into a team who enjoy your participation and are happy to support you in the early stages of your integration. Your workplace is centrally located and has very good public transport links.
Hamburg University of Applied Sciences is committed to ensuring teaching excellence. Candidates are asked to enclose all important documents relating to their teaching experience in their application.
In addition, they are requested to include a brief curriculum vitae along with the usual application documents. You can find a form online.
