DEPARTMENT OF DESIGN

CHAIR: “INTERACTION DESIGN”

The position is a permanent full-time position.

ABOUT US

Developing sustainable solutions to the societal challenges of today and tomorrow. This is the goal of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg), northern Germany’s leading applied sciences university when it comes to reflective practice. Our central focus is the excellence of our teaching and our degree courses. Simultaneously, HAW Hamburg is continuing to develop its profile as a research university. People from more than 100 countries help make HAW Hamburg what it is, and our diversity is our particular strength.

ABOUT THE PROFESSORSHIP

Interaction Design is part of the Communication Design programme at the Department of Design in the Faculty of Design, Media and Information. Interaction Design has been an important part of the programme for many years and will in future be developed further as a key digital skills discipline. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching and research in this field on the Bachelor’s and Master’s Communication Design programmes. Interaction Design is on a par with the subjects Brand Design, Editorial Design, Photography, Type Design, Typography and Time-based Media, constituting a common core of subjects. The subject will also act as a bridge between those disciplines and contribute to the growing interdisciplinary focus of the Department of Design.

YOUR ROLE

Interaction Design is to be established as a future-oriented and interdisciplinary teaching and research area in addition to the above-mentioned key subjects within the Communication Design programme.
The successful candidate will focus on the design of human-machine interactivity and its visual, sensory as well as responsive characteristics and qualities. Researching artistic and experimental opportunities and developing function-oriented as well as application-related approaches will be at the centre of the teaching concept. Interaction Design can thus be considered a key discipline within the Communication Design programme, giving our digital environment expression through design, adding perceptibility and usability, and making it come alive.

The field offers a multitude of opportunities for interactive research and design within the context of aesthetic, technological and societal considerations – from designing digital media to developing spatial, interactive and holistic systems.

YOUR PROFILE

We expect you to have a university degree in a design-related, artistic or similar subject. The successful candidate will also have relevant experience in design practice as well as in research and teaching within the field of interaction design.

Our designer will be a recognised personality who has made a visionary contribution to the development of their field and can demonstrate particular skills and motivation in relation to teaching as well as obtaining artistic and scientific insights through research and practical application.
The successful candidate is expected to have had at least five years of practical professional experience, at least three of which will have been spent outside of the higher education sector. Clear proof of practical experience, gained for instance in the design or media industry, research institutes or independent or freelance work, must be prepared and submitted along with the application documents. Evidence of design-related or artistic activities must be provided in the form of relevant documents.

The successful candidate will be able to complete administrative tasks within the scope of the management of the department, be committed to constructive cooperation, and contribute to as well as expand the existing fields of research. Connection and cooperation with the Department of Media Technology within the faculty, international partner universities, and the national as well as international design, technology and communications industries should be established and further strengthened. Applicants should therefore be highly fluent in English. They should also be prepared to complete tasks in self-governance, serve on committees and boards, and act as managers and laboratory managers.

In addition, the successful candidate should be willing to contribute to developing HAW Hamburg’s digitalisation profile, especially with regard to digital teaching formats.

INFORMATION

For appointment as a professor, as well as the general staff requirements, the appointment requirements in accordance with Section 15 Para. 1-6 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (HmbHG) also apply. These can be read on our website.

This includes the willingness to participate in the self-administration committees of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences as well as a choice of residence in proximity to the university.

The denomination of the vacant post is under the caveat of assessment at appropriate intervals in accordance with Section 12 Para 7 HmbHG.

As well as the basic salary of grade W2 and basic performance benefits, a provision of appointment performance benefits is also possible which can be negotiated with the university president. In addition, there is also the possibility of granting a bonus from third-party funds.

Candidates who have not yet reached the age of 50 at the time of appointment may be appointed as tenured officials, otherwise the employment relationship is that of a standard employee.

OUR OFFER

We offer you challenging work in an open-minded, forward-thinking university. You will be integrated into a team who enjoy your participation and are happy to support you in the early stages of your integration. Your workplace is centrally located and has very good public transport links.
