    You will contribute to establishing the focus on hydrogen technology at the Faculty of Life Sciences. You will actively conduct research, with a focus on process engineering, in the field of hydrogen technology in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy Systems IWES and the Competence Centre for Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency (CC4E) and integrate your findings into teaching. Possible areas of research include the dynamics and controllability of electrolysers and fuel cells, the development of degradation and simulation models, and the development of control and operating strategies. The research infrastructure will be provided by the Frauenhofer IWES, for example within the scope of the Hydrogen Lab Bremerhaven.

    In order to allow for particular research achievements within the scope of the professorship, your duties will predominantly include research activities and the development of transfer and cooperation relationships. For this purpose, your teaching load will be reduced from 18 to 11 teaching hours until the summer semester of 2028.

    In addition, you will represent the fields of alternative energy sources and thermal separation methods in the Bachelor and Master's programmes at the Departments of Process Engineering and Environmental Engineering. Your duties will also include teaching classes in English in basic engineering subjects for other courses of study within the Faculty of Life Sciences.


    We are looking for a person with an engineering degree in the field of process engineering or chemical engineering, or another course of study related to engineering with a relevant specialisation.

    You will have at least five years of practical professional experience, at least three of which must have been spent outside of the higher education sector.

    We are looking for a committed individual with extensive expertise in the field of hydrogen technology and the related design of process engineering systems, proven through their practical and scientific activities. In addition, you will ideally have experience in the fields of alternative energy sources and thermal separation methods.

    Research experience in the field of hydrogen technology and experience in obtaining third-party funding is desirable. Interest in the joint implementation of interdisciplinary research projects in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems IWES and the Competence Centre for Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency (CC4E) is a prerequisite.

    You should have some teaching experience, interest in teaching issues and an interdisciplinary approach that enables you to communicate how the scientific basics relate to programme-specific content. You will take an active role in shaping skills-centred and diversity-oriented teaching and supervise placements, projects and dissertations.

    You enjoy teamwork and have a good command of English. International applicants are expected to acquire a knowledge of German. Leadership experience, ideally in the form of a management role with responsibility for personnel, is desirable.

    Willingness to actively participate in the development of the department and the faculty is a prerequisite. This includes a willingness to assume positions within the framework of academic self-administration.


    For appointment as a professor, as well as the general staff requirements, the appointment requirements in accordance with Section 15 Para. 1-6 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (HmbHG) also apply. These can be read on our website.

    This includes the willingness to participate in the self-administration committees of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences as well as a choice of residence in proximity to the university.

    The denomination of the vacant post is under the caveat of assessment at appropriate intervals in accordance with Section 12 Para 7 HmbHG.

    As well as the basic salary of grade W2 and basic performance benefits, a provision of appointment performance benefits is also possible which can be negotiated with the university president. In addition, there is also the possibility of granting a bonus from third-party funds.

    Candidates who have not yet reached the age of 50 at the time of appointment may be appointed as tenured officials, otherwise the employment relationship is that of a standard employee.

    The advertised position is a special professorship funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Ministry of Science, Research, Equality and Districts of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in accordance with § 12 para. 9 HmbHG, for which a predominant activity in research and the development of transfer and cooperation relationships with a reduced scope of eleven teaching hours is planned as a service task, limited until 30.09.2028 at the latest, within the framework of a funding of HAW Hamburg in the federal-state program "FH-Personal".
