Developing sustainable solutions to the societal challenges of today and tomorrow. This is the goal of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg), northern Germany’s leading applied sciences university when it comes to reflective practice. Our central focus is the excellence of our teaching and our degree courses. Simultaneously, HAW Hamburg is continuing to develop its profile as a research university. People from more than 100 countries help make HAW Hamburg what it is, and our diversity is our particular strength.

On the one hand, you will represent the basic topics of Control Engineering in the Bachelor degree programmes at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Production. On the other hand, you will play a key role in shaping the teaching of the advanced study module in Automation Technology. In this respect, your focus should be on the areas of application of mechanical engineering, such as mobility, robotics and production.

Your responsibilities will also include supervising applied projects, laboratory sessions and dissertations for the Bachelor and Masters degree programmes.

With research and development projects, you are able to independently set topic-related focal points and advance the field on a strategic basis. You are expected to contribute innovative ideas regarding the content-related and didactic further development of the classes and laboratory work.

You have successfully completed a degree in engineering, preferably mechanical or electrical engineering.

Accordingly, and on the basis of several years of professional experience, you have sound knowledge of automation engineering, in particular industrial control systems (PLC) and the control of machines and systems, in mobile or logistical applications, for instance. You are familiar with the typical programming languages in the field of automation engineering, such as Matlab/Simulink and the PLC programming languages from your previous work.

Knowledge of another field, such as the modelling of control systems, bus systems, industrial measurement technology, or machine and installations safety, is also desirable.

You can demonstrate your aptitude for scientific work with a relevant doctorate or a comparable qualification. A link to the existing research topics in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Production and a strengthening of the work in such areas is desirable. We welcome experience in the acquisition of external funding.

You also enjoy teaching and working with students and have very good didactic skills, which you have preferably already demonstrated in your initial teaching experience. You are also able to hold lectures in English.

For appointment as a professor, as well as the general staff requirements, the appointment requirements in accordance with Section 15 Para. 1-6 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (HmbHG) also apply. These can be read on our website.

This includes the willingness to participate in the self-administration committees of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences as well as a choice of residence in proximity to the university.

The denomination of the vacant post is under the caveat of assessment at appropriate intervals in accordance with Section 12 Para 7 HmbHG.

As well as the basic salary of grade W2 and basic performance benefits, a provision of appointment performance benefits is also possible which can be negotiated with the university president. In addition, there is also the possibility of granting a bonus from third-party funds.

Candidates who have not yet reached the age of 50 at the time of appointment may be appointed as tenured officials, otherwise the employment relationship is that of a standard employee.

The Hamburg University of Applied Sciences makes staffing decisions based on suitability, ability and professional performance. Disabled persons and their equivalents take precedence over legally unprivileged candidates of the same suitability, ability and professional performance.

In particular, we encourage female academics or experts to apply to this professorship. The underrepresented gender shall be viewed as preferable in case of equal qualifications in accordance with Section 14 Para. 3 HmgHG.

We offer you challenging work in an open-minded, forward-thinking university. You will be integrated into a team who enjoy your participation and are happy to support you in the early stages of your integration. Your workplace is centrally located and has very good public transport links.

The Hamburg University of Applied Sciences has set the goal of a gender-equal, discrimination-conscious university culture which is sensitive to diversity, and wants to achieve a balanced gender ratio. For queries in matters of equal opportunities please contact the equal opportunities officer.

We support our employees and students in reconciling work and family, e.g. with counselling services when caring for relatives or special emergency childcare situations. Our senior staff are authorised to lead teams with different work-times and work-life-balance models, as well as mixed age structures.

We welcome applications from candidates with a migration background. The Hamburg University of Applied Sciences is part of the diversity audit of the donors’ association and has been awarded as a family-friendly university on several occasions.

Hamburg University of Applied Sciences is committed to ensuring teaching excellence. Candidates are asked to enclose all important documents relating to their teaching experience in their application.

In addition, they are requested to include a brief curriculum vitae along with the usual application documents. You can find a
form online.
