Developing sustainable solutions to the societal challenges of today and tomorrow.     Within the framework of the professorship, you teach classes and conduct research in the field of energy storage systems and their integration into sustainable energy systems. In your classes, you cover contents such as different storage technologies (e.g. battery storage) as well as connection to and integration into power grids (also for grid-serving applications). You hold seminar-style lectures and supervise practical laboratory work in a competent and practically-oriented manner.

    You are also prepared to support basic education in our technical courses of study. You will also contribute actively to the further development of the degree courses and teaching. We would also like you to set your own priorities here.

    With intellectual curiosity, you will also learn about other engineering subjects, if necessary, and be prepared to provide teaching in them.

    In addition to your teaching, you will also develop application-based research and development work. You are prepared to collaborate with other subjects, departments and research institutes (e.g. the CC4E, Competence Centre for Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency) at HAW Hamburg as well as with partners from industry, business and academia on an interdisciplinary basis.

    We expect you to be willing to get involved in academic self-governance, for instance by taking on a leadership role, coordination tasks, responsibility for personnel and/or laboratory work, or advisory tasks for our students.

    You will also participate in the joint Electrical Engineering degree programme within the scope of our collaboration with the USST (University of Shanghai for Science and Technology) and the SHC (Shanghai-Hamburg College) which is located in Shanghai. In addition, you will teach some of your classes in Shanghai. You will give lectures and supervise practical laboratory work in German and will contribute to the further development of the programme as well as administrative work in relation to the programme. This will also include teaching classes in Shanghai for approximately four weeks each year.


    You have a degree in electrical engineering or have completed a comparable technical or scientific course of study.

    You can also demonstrate your aptitude for academic research and writing by having successfully completed an academic doctorate which is related to the aforementioned subjects.

    You have multiple years of practical professional experience in the field or in relation to similar technologies. You have gained this experience thanks to industry or industry-related research and development.

    Ideally, you have in-depth application knowledge of one or more of the following areas:

    • storage technologies (particularly battery storage),
    • intelligent networking of storage systems and renewable energies (smart grid), preferably in combination with IoT and AI,
    • integration of energy storage systems into grids,
    • mobile storage systems & electromobility,
    • modelling & optimisation of energy storage systems,
    • analysis and evaluation of storage systems in connection with flexibilities & integrated energy management
    • development of innovative energy storage applications (especially grid-serving applications)
    • sustainability and energy efficiency in energy supply

    Working in English is a matter of course for you.

    Your specialist knowledge in the field of energy storage systems will enable you to significantly enhance the study programme in the field of renewable energy systems and sustainable development (e.g. in relation to the sustainable development goals) within the faculty.

    Ideally, you have relevant academic experience in the area of energy storage systems, taking applications and the use in power grid systems into consideration, e.g. in power electronics. You are willing to use your contacts to secure external funding.

    You enjoy methodology and didactics in your professional field and have proven skills and ideally some initial teaching experience, as well as the motivation to further develop your teaching skills in the field of higher education on a structured basis. Diversity competence, especially in relation to handling cultural differences between students, is a prerequisite, and you are expected to take this into account when preparing your trial lecture.

    You are a native speaker of German and will support our international students who are only just starting to learn German.

    You are expected to be able and willing to work on a constructive and cooperative basis with your colleagues in the department. You will convince us of your ability to work in a team during the interview.

    You will demonstrate your teaching expertise at a trial lecture. In this respect, the ability to teach in seminar form and project work should take centre stage.


    For appointment as a professor, as well as the general staff requirements, the appointment requirements in accordance with Section 15 Para. 1-6 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (HmbHG) also apply. These can be read on our website.

    This includes the willingness to participate in the self-administration committees of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences as well as a choice of residence in proximity to the university.

    The denomination of the vacant post is under the caveat of assessment at appropriate intervals in accordance with Section 12 Para 7 HmbHG.

    As well as the basic salary of grade W2 and basic performance benefits, a provision of appointment performance benefits is also possible which can be negotiated with the university president. In addition, there is also the possibility of granting a bonus from third-party funds.

    Candidates who have not yet reached the age of 50 at the time of appointment may be appointed as tenured officials, otherwise the employment relationship is that of a standard employee.
