Developing sustainable solutions to the societal challenges of today and tomorrow. This is the goal of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg), northern Germany’s leading applied sciences university when it comes to reflective practice. Our central focus is the excellence of our teaching and our degree courses. Simultaneously, HAW Hamburg is continuing to develop its profile as a research university. People from more than 100 countries help make HAW Hamburg what it is, and our diversity is our particular strength.

You will represent the teaching area of IT Security with a system-related focus in the four Bachelor degree programmes, and the focal point of “Security and Reliability” in the Masters degree programme in the Department of Computer Science. You will also be expected to teach basic courses in the teaching area of Operating Systems.

In this respect, you should have detailed knowledge of the methods for securing mobile devices, internet platforms or cloud infrastructures. In at least one of the following subjects:

    • Technologies and concepts for system security and reliability
    • Empirical methods for demonstrating system security and the resilience of security-
       critical systems
    • Holistic methods of risk analysis and the security assessment of systems

you should also have a proven independent professional profile beyond your local region.

In general, we require the willingness to actively participate in the teaching and further development of the courses of study as well as the design of the Masters focal point on “Security and Reliability”. Through visible involvement in teaching and research, you should strengthen the profile of the department and actively attract external funding. In particular, we expect active participation in ahoi.digital, the cooperation platform for Computer Science of the universities in Hamburg.

To support a greater degree of internationalisation, you should also be able to teach classes in English and get involved in the cooperation with international partner universities. We also expect a basic willingness to partake actively in the self-governance of the university.

In addition to a sound knowledge of the basic principles of computer science, we expect you to have independent theoretical and practical experience in IT security with a focus on the factors relating to operating systems.

You have a proven professional profile which you are able to demonstrate with relevant publications, patents and/or corresponding areas of special professional focus. You have a relevant university degree – ideally in computer science – with a good grade, you hold a relevant doctorate, you have extensive practical experience in the above-mentioned subject areas and fulfil the requirements of the appointment which are referred to in the job advertisement.

For appointment as a professor, as well as the general staff requirements, the appointment requirements in accordance with Section 15 Para. 1-6 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (HmbHG) also apply. These can be read on our website.

This includes the willingness to participate in the self-administration committees of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences as well as a choice of residence in proximity to the university.

The denomination of the vacant post is under the caveat of assessment at appropriate intervals in accordance with Section 12 Para 7 HmbHG.

As well as the basic salary of grade W2 and basic performance benefits, a provision of appointment performance benefits is also possible which can be negotiated with the university president. In addition, there is also the possibility of granting a bonus from third-party funds.

Candidates who have not yet reached the age of 50 at the time of appointment may be appointed as tenured officials, otherwise the employment relationship is that of a standard employee.

The Hamburg University of Applied Sciences makes staffing decisions based on suitability, ability and professional performance. Disabled persons and their equivalents take precedence over legally unprivileged candidates of the same suitability, ability and professional performance.

In particular, we encourage female academics or experts to apply to this professorship. The underrepresented gender shall be viewed as preferable in case of equal qualifications in accordance with Section 14 Para. 3 HmgHG.

We offer you challenging work in an open-minded, forward-thinking university. You will be integrated into a team who enjoy your participation and are happy to support you in the early stages of your integration. Your workplace is centrally located and has very good public transport links.

The Hamburg University of Applied Sciences has set the goal of a gender-equal, discrimination-conscious university culture which is sensitive to diversity, and wants to achieve a balanced gender ratio. For queries in matters of equal opportunities please contact the equal opportunities officer.

We support our employees and students in reconciling work and family, e.g. with counselling services when caring for relatives or special emergency childcare situations. Our senior staff are authorised to lead teams with different work-times and work-life-balance models, as well as mixed age structures.

We welcome applications from candidates with a migration background. The Hamburg University of Applied Sciences is part of the diversity audit of the donors’ association and has been awarded as a family-friendly university on several occasions.

Hamburg University of Applied Sciences is committed to ensuring teaching excellence. Candidates are asked to enclose all important documents relating to their teaching experience in their application.

In addition, they are requested to include a brief curriculum vitae along with the usual application documents. You can find a
