We are looking for a

The post is permanent and full-time. Staffing is intended at 1st September, 2021 earliest.

Developing sustainable solutions to the societal challenges of today and tomorrow. This is the goal of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg), northern Germany’s leading applied sciences university when it comes to reflective practice. Our central focus is the excellence of our teaching and our degree courses. Simultaneously, HAW Hamburg is continuing to develop its profile as a research university. People from more than 100 countries help make HAW Hamburg what it is, and our diversity is our particular strength.

You will represent the teaching in the field of Industrial Control Engineering within the scope of lectures in seminar form and laboratory practicals both professionally and drawing on your practical experience. Focal points of the Chair are planned for the areas of Process Control Engineering, Industrial Bus Systems and Building Automation. You will also be willing to provide teaching in the basic courses on Automation Technology. You will also contribute actively to the further development of the degree programmes and the teaching. The successful candidate will also be able to decide on their own specialist areas within the set curriculum.

Your lectures in the Bachelor and Masters degree programmes of the department may also be held in English.
With intellectual curiosity, you will also learn about other engineering subjects, if necessary, and be prepared to provide teaching in them.

In addition to your teaching, you will also develop application-based research and development work. You are prepared to cooperate with other subjects and departments at the university on an interdisciplinary basis as well as with partners from industry and higher education. You will also strengthen the scientific basis for the university profile in the field of Building Automation as regards our Research and Transfer Centres, in the Research and Transfer Centre for “intelligent industrial innovations”, for example.

It goes without saying that you are able to complete tasks in academic self-governance, such as the management of laboratories. You will also participate in exchanges with international partner universities, such as the USST-Shanghai Hamburg College and in the Erasmus+, HAWeltweit, HAW goes USA and HAW Down Under programmes.

You studied automation technology or completed a comparable technical degree, and ideally have in-depth application knowledge in the field of software methods in the above-mentioned specialist areas. Working in English does not pose you any problem. You can also demonstrate your aptitude for academic research and writing by having successfully completed an academic doctorate which is related to the aforementioned subjects.

Your current practical professional experience of several years in industrial or industry-related research and development also includes the field of Industrial Control and Instrumentation Technology. Ideally, you also have experience in Building Automation, taking energy efficiency into account. You are willing to use your contacts to acquire external funding.

You enjoy methodology and teaching in your professional field and have proven skills and ideally some initial teaching experience, as well as the motivation to develop your teaching skills in the field of higher education further on a structured basis.

For appointment as a professor, as well as the general staff requirements, the appointment requirements in accordance with Section 15 Para. 1-6 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (HmbHG) also apply. These can be read on our website.

This includes the willingness to participate in the self-administration committees of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences as well as a choice of residence in proximity to the university.

The denomination of the vacant post is under the caveat of assessment at appropriate intervals in accordance with Section 12 Para 7 HmbHG.

As well as the basic salary of grade W2 and basic performance benefits, a provision of appointment performance benefits is also possible which can be negotiated with the university president. In addition, there is also the possibility of granting a bonus from third-party funds.

Candidates who have not yet reached the age of 50 at the time of appointment may be appointed as tenured officials, otherwise the employment relationship is that of a standard employee.

The Hamburg University of Applied Sciences makes staffing decisions based on suitability, ability and professional performance. Disabled persons and their equivalents take precedence over legally unprivileged candidates of the same suitability, ability and professional performance.

In particular, we encourage female academics or experts to apply to this professorship. The underrepresented gender shall be viewed as preferable in case of equal qualifications in accordance with Section 14 Para. 3 HmgHG.

We offer you challenging work in an open-minded, forward-thinking university. You will be integrated into a team who enjoy your participation and are happy to support you in the early stages of your integration. Your workplace is centrally located and has very good public transport links.

The Hamburg University of Applied Sciences has set the goal of a gender-equal, discrimination-conscious university culture which is sensitive to diversity, and wants to achieve a balanced gender ratio. For queries in matters of equal opportunities please contact the equal opportunities officer.

We support our employees and students in reconciling work and family, e.g. with counselling services when caring for relatives or special emergency childcare situations. Our senior staff are authorised to lead teams with different work-times and work-life-balance models, as well as mixed age structures.

We welcome applications from candidates with a migration background. The Hamburg University of Applied Sciences is part of the diversity audit of the donors’ association and has been awarded as a family-friendly university on several occasions.
